1. I don't know how to be sexy in this element.
The air makes everything move too fast. In the days when I lived underwater I felt textures of things that lived, grew and formed in liquid; my hand passed over the infinite silkiness of a sea cucumber, the bright metal flecks of a fish; abalone saucers like the ones distributed under coffee cups in the cafe. |
2. Rough oysters, razor mussel shells, blast and sting of anemone, all experienced through slow sway and cold and viscosity unlike anything I'll ever know again.
I had nothing to tell that world, couldn't speak if I wanted to, only ghastly underwater yells that blurred words to meaninglessness.
I had nothing to tell that world, couldn't speak if I wanted to, only ghastly underwater yells that blurred words to meaninglessness.
3. We signed, we made facial expressions and I kept to myself as much as I could. I succeeded so thoroughly that the words no longer came to me, not in passing a human, swimming by, not in messages sent ashore - who will I write, then - nor, even in the moment when it counted, when I watched the people around me begin to fade, when their faces pressed the green glass and I couldn't - or wouldn't - lift the cable to speak to those above.
That time is gone.
That time is gone.
4. My life had been change, on the surface, a constant internal and external adjustment, like I was a tacky lawn ornament, spinning wildly with the prevailing metaphoric winds.
Of course when I returned to the surface, I discovered that in the interim, submersion had become unnecessary.
We know which pier extends the farthest, and we follow that one.
